Department of Operations Management and Strategy

The Department of Operations Management and Strategy in the UB School of Management focuses on two broad areas:

  • Supply Chains and Operations Management
  • Business Strategy, Entrepreneurship and International Business

Our faculty members are strongly committed to teaching and imparting state-of-the-art knowledge to students at both the graduate and undergraduate levels, enabling them to work with outstanding effectiveness and efficiency in industry. 

The undergraduate courses offered currently include the core course Production/Operations Management and three electives: Supply Chains Management, Service Operations and Extreme Events Management and Business Forecasting. In the strategy area, the capstone course Fundamentals of Strategic Management is offered, besides the elective course Entrepreneurship and Small Business.

MBA students may customize their degree programs by choosing the Supply Chains and Operations Management (SCOM) option, offered through our department. This option was created to prepare students with skills necessary to assume managerial positions in supply chains management, global sourcing and procurement, manufacturing, logistics and service operations. The department has also just introduced the new MBA option, Global Service and Supply Management (GSSM).

Additionally, the department also offers a “fast-track” Master of Science in Supply Chains and Operations Management (MS in SCOM) that can be completed in one year. It is available to those who have earned an undergraduate degree in business, engineering or the sciences. The objective of the program is to develop graduates who intend to pursue a focused career and assume leadership positions in supply chains management, logistics, procurement and manufacturing operations and contribute to the competitiveness of firms operating in the global, dynamic marketplace.

Doctoral students may currently specialize in the supply chains and operations management area. The objective of this program is to develop world-class scholars and researchers in supply chains and operations management. Our doctoral students have won several national awards for their dissertation research, collaborating actively with our faculty in research and teaching. A doctoral program in Business Strategy is being planned for launch in fall 2009.
