Topic Areas

In this unique four-part program, physicians and other clinicians will develop vital business skills and grow and apply their knowledge to improve the patient experience and the value of care delivered in their organizations.

Theme 1 - The Health Care Environment

  • A strategic understanding of the changing health care landscape: 
    • Through a series of presentations and discussions with health care leaders and experts, you'll gain a strategic understanding of the major trends, their implications and the transformations taking place in health care.
  • Health economics:
    • The operation of the health insurance market, basic reimbursement in various settings, and the move to value-based reimbursement.
    • Understanding different incentives and the influence on behavior.
    • Basic economic concepts like supplier-induced demand, moral hazard, adverse selection.
  • Population health:
    • The social determinants of health.
    • Segmenting health populations and provider-assumed risk.
    • The role population risk will be taking in value-based models.
  • Health policy:
    • Covering changes in the Affordable Care Act, the Health Insurance Exchanges, Accountable Care Organizations, PQRS, HITECH, MACRA, NYS Medicaid changes (especially DSRIP, MLTC) and the Nurse Practitioner Modernization Act.

Theme 2 - Leadership

Personal leadership: In this section, you'll learn to identify your strengths and limitations and will develop the leadership skills necessary to effectively lead others. By better understanding yourself, you'll be better prepared to motivate and manage those around you.

  • Leading change in health care:
    • You will gain a framework for leading effective change in the complex and dynamic environment of health care. The session will address the cognitive (mind), motivational (heart) and process (path) components of effective change.
  • The development of physicians as inter-disciplinary team leaders:
    • Shared decision-making, and the use of informal influence to achieve change in matrix organizations.
  • Leading innovation in health care:
    • What it takes for an innovation to flourish, innovation in existing organizations.
  • Innovative models in health care delivery:
    • Process innovations, eHealth, mHealth, and how innovations are changing the way care is delivered.

Theme 3 - The Basic Toolbox of Clinical Managers

  • Coaching and motivation:
    • Focus on creating a team based environment and learning the skills necessary to coach members of a high performing team.
  • Developing a business plan:
    • Focus on a new entrepreneurial example, and an example within an existing organization.
  • Health care financial statements:
    • Focus on basic financial management using health care statements:  Balance sheet, Income statement and Cash flow statement.
  • Health care operations management:
    • Organizing and allocating resources to maximize patient experience and effectively utilize scarce human and supply resources.
    • Process flow, managing bottlenecks, capacity forecasting, managing queues, managing supplies, practical use of LEAN in health care.
  • Health care negotiations and conflict management:
    • Experiential exercises, lectures and readings will help you understand effective negotiating skills, placing particular emphasis on the negotiation and bargaining skills required for all managers.
    • Lease negotiation, physician contract negotiation, understanding payer contracts.
  • Using health care IT to improve care and decision-making:
    • General sense is that the EMR is understood and fairly well-established in most settings
    • How can we better use the EMR to improve care without blowing it up?
    • Management dashboards (both financial and clinical) to focus on the “critical few” rather than the trivial many.

Theme 4 - Capstone Assignment

  • You will choose a particular project from the toolbox and apply it to your own organization.

Program Designer

Larry Zielinski is the Program Designer for the Executive Development in Health Care Management program. Mr. Zielinski  is joining the School of Management as executive in residence for health care administration. In this role, he  will help formulate and execute the School’s strategy in health care administration.  He will also identify opportunities in health care and business for the school to pursue in the form of new programs, partnerships, collaborations, development opportunities, and potential areas for scholarship and external engagement. Mr. Zielinski will also continue to teach multiple courses in health care administration.

Larry has led successful, market-dominant organizations in both health care and banking over the last 35 years. He runs a health care consulting practice and has served as president of Buffalo General Hospital, the flagship center of the Kaleida Health System, and president of the Visiting Nursing Association of Western New York. Prior to his health care career, Larry was a successful banking executive at Goldome, an $11 billion regional institution serving New York and Florida. His banking and finance background are a unique complement in today’s challenging world of health care economics.

He earned his MBA from the School of Management and a bachelor’s in sociology from UB. Larry also is a graduate of Harvard Business School’s Program for Management Development.
