Russell Van Coevering, MD/MBA '17

Enhance your world-class clinical training with advanced management education to become a sought-after health care leader.

Maximize your medical education investment with an MBA. The School of Management and the Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences offer a five-year program leading to both an MD and MBA.

Be Career Ready

  • Apply analytical skills to understand the delicate balance between patient outcomes and efficiency
  • Develop effective leadership, teamwork, critical thinking and communication skills
  • Develop practical financial management skills
  • Understand the inter-related role of health care policy development, facility management and strategic planning
  • Immerse yourself in the diverse community of full-time MBAs
  • Network with alumni and leaders from the top health care organizations around the country through the school’s active Health Care Advisory Panel

The collaborative program reduces by one full year the usual four-year MD program and two-year MBA program. As an MD/MBA, you must meet the degree requirements of each program, except for the reduction in total credit hours.

Apply to the MBA program during your third year of medical school. The following fall, you will enroll and take MBA core and elective courses. In your final year, you will concurrently take your fourth year of medical school and remaining MBA electives and capstone, for a total of five years.

Apply to Both Schools

Apply separately to both schools. Applications do not have to be submitted concurrently. For MBA admissions, you may submit your MCAT  scores in place of the GMAT or GRE. If you are an early assurance medical student, you will be required to take the GMAT or GRE, or be waived with permission of both schools. For specific program timeline and curriculum, consult with our Graduate Programs Office before applying.
