At the UB School of Management, case competitions provide important opportunities for students to integrate their learning across functional areas.
The nature and variety of cases require students to draw upon a range of expertise and skills enabling them to propose solutions and present their recommendations. Feedback from judges provides input on analytical and presentation skills to assist students in their professional development and helps inform faculty and program administration of ways in which we can strengthen the content and delivery of the MBA program.
The Steven C. Verney First-Year MBA Case Competition is an integral element of the core strategic management course involving all first-year MBA students in the first round. All study teams present their turn-around plans for troubled companies to boards composed of corporate representatives, university adminstrators and second-year MBA students. Cash prizes are funded by Steven C. Verney, vice president of Allstate Insurance Company and graduate of the BS and MBA programs at UB School of Management.
The second-year MBA case competition, held annually each February, is an elective event for self-selected, four-member teams of students. Prize funding and judges are provided by Columbus McKinnon Corporation, Ernst & Young LLC and Moog Inc.
The Steven C. Verney grant also provides limited funding for sponsorships to national competitions as requested by students. UB MBA teams have recently won competitions at The University of Pittsburgh and Syracuse University and participated in various international case competitions including:
