Doctoral Candidate Receives National Award

BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Lorena Mathien, a doctoral candidate in the University at Buffalo School of Management, received the Institute of Supply Management (ISM) Doctoral Dissertation Award for 2012.

In addition to national recognition for her scholarly achievements, Mathien will receive a $6,000 grant to complete her dissertation on logistics outsourcing decisions. The ISM award recognizes early-stage dissertations and promotes high-impact research in the field of supply management.

Mathien is studying for a doctorate in the School of Management’s Operations Management and Strategy Department. Her dissertation advisor, Nallan Suresh, is a UB Distinguished Professor and chair of the department.

“This is the third time one of Dr. Suresh’s advisees has received this award, which is a testament not only to his hard work and dedication to his students, but to the quality of our program as a whole,” said Arjang Assad, dean of the School of Management.

The previous recipients were Canan Kocabasoglu-Hillmer, PhD ’02, senior lecturer in operations management at Cass Business School, City University of London, and James Hamister, PhD ’08, assistant professor of information systems and operations management at Wright State University.

The ISM is the premier purchasing and supply chain management association in the world. It issues the ISM Manufacturing Index, a widely used economic index that monitors employment, production inventories, new orders and supplier deliveries.
