It's Not All Work

Each year the student-run, student-funded Graduate Management Association (GMA) hosts a number of happy hours, banquets, picnics, trips to sporting events and outdoor activities. The GMA also coordinates an active community service program. Students work with organizations such as Habitat for Humanity, the Gloria J. Parks Community Center in the City of Buffalo's University Heights District, and the Hearts for the Homeless soup kitchen in downtown Buffalo. Michele Gliss, Class of 2000, said of these GMA events: "I've had a chance to become close friends with students from a number of countries and backgrounds. The GMA supports building lifelong friendships based on learning about each other, not just spending time studying and in the classroom."

Getting Involved

In addition to participating in GMA activities, MBA students enjoy involvement in a numerous other professional and fraternal organizations, including the following:

  • American College of Healthcare Executives
  • American Marketing Association
  • Delta Sigma Pi
  • Financial Management Association
  • International Business Association
  • MIS Association
  • Pi Sigma Epsilon
  • Society for Human Resource Management
  • UB Accounting Association
  • Women in Management

Making the Case

It's no secret that competition is the main currency of the business world, whether it's competing for a new job or devising a strategy to land that big client. Our students are given the opportunity to develop and test skills that are vital to career success during the MBA program's annual corporate-sponsored second -year MBA Case Competition and the Steven C. Verney MBA Case Competition for first-year students.

Teams of our MBAs compete against one another by analyzing a complex case study of an actual company. They then present their recommendations to a panel of executive judges who serve as a representative board of directors of the company and quiz the students on their findings. The case competitions allow students to practice and demonstrate their analytical skills, presentation abilities, and team problem-solving talents while competing for monetary prizes and school-wide prestige.

Interaction

MBAs have opportunities to interact with each other and with corporate representatives in Country Forums and Conversations with an Executive. In Country Forums students from a certain country or region of the world present on their area and engage fellow students in a dialogue about the traditions, economics and opportunities in their part of the world. Conversations with an Executive, co-sponsored by the School of Management Alumni Association, brings executives to campus for informal presentations and conversations on their career paths and opportunities for students in varied areas of management. Both of these events typically occur six times each year.
