The transition from high school to college is a difficult one, regardless of how strong a student you are. Things in college are just different and they are different in every way!
What are those differences?
Study Time
Typically, in high school, students spend approximately 35 hours per week in the classroom, and report that they spend an average of 5 hours per week on homework.
This is an average of 40 hours per week spent on class time and studying in high school.
In college, students spend approximately 15 hours per week in the classroom, and need to plan to spend an average of 30 hours per week studying. The general rule is two hours outside of class for every one hour in class.
This is an average of 45 hours per week spent on class time and studying in college.
College is a full-time job!
First-semester students should not plan to work more than 10-12 hours per week if they plan to be successful students.
Personal Freedom and Time Management
- On-line time management help can be found at the Counseling Services Web site
- High school is required and generally free. College is voluntary and in most cases, costly
- In high school, teachers and parents usually structured your time. In college, you must learn to manage your own time.
