Educational Technology Equipped Classrooms (ETEC)
Usage Instructions
Jacobs 106 / 110 / 112 / 122 / 320
Alfiero 102 / 103 / 104

Combinations: Faculty needs to see Connie Rieck or member of the IT staff.
Keys: See Connie Rieck for keys. When you are not teaching for a semester in an ETEC room, please return your keys.
Alarms: Each piece of equipment within the podium cabinet is alarmed. Please do not move any device (except the mouse, projector remote control, and microphone), since the alarm will sound and will alert Public Safety. If the alarm is accidentally triggered, please notify both Public Safety and David Costello, Julia or Marina immediately. The consultants in the Jacobs Computer Lab, 645-3332, can contact the IT staff.
Podium: Each podium is outfitted with a Creston touch-screen system which controls all equipment in the cabinet as well as the projector. Press the "Push to Begin" button on the touch-screen to enable the "system."
LCD Projector
- Turn on projector using the "Projector On" button in the lower right-hand side of the screen
- The projector takes 45 seconds to warm up
- The projector will automatically shut off when the cabinet door closes
Steps to follow for each class
- Power on - When you open the podium, power is turned on to every device except the ceiling projector. Select "Projector On" at the lower right hand side of the touch-screen to turn on the projector. (Except room 320 - Everything has to be manually turned on)
- The logon box appears. The username and password are on the sheet of paper on the podium desk
- To switch from one device to another, select the appropriate "Program" button along the left side of the touch-screen
- At end of session, remove your portable storage device, videotapes, CD-ROM disks
- DO NOT shut down or turn off the computer
- Close up, and check that all doors and drawers are securely fastened. In room 320 make sure the projector is turned off by pressing 'Power' twice
- Lock room door when you leave
1) VCR (VHS format)/DVD Player
- Located in the cabinet below the touch-screen in Jacobs or in the media cabinet in Alfiero classrooms
- To adjust volume, select "Program Volume" on the right side of the touch-screen
- Remember to take your videotape or DVD with you when you leave
2) WOLF (Visualizer)
- Camera can be used to project 3 dimensional objects as well as opaque and transparent 2D images
- Located in the "garage" on top of the podium in Jacobs or next to the podium in Alfiero
- Select the "Visualizer" button on the touch-screen, to turn it on
- Carefully adjust mirror using green thumb hold. Do not put finger prints on mirror
- Use zoom/focus controls on the touch-screen
- Check that drawer is locked in place before leaving
3) INT PC (Internal PC)
- Computer is never shut down and should be running
- Please contact the IT department, before the semester begins to have any software installed
4) EXT PC (External PC)
- You can connect any desktop, laptop, notebook, PC or MAC, to the podium to use the ceiling LCD projector
- You must have a monitor cable with the appropriate connector (or adapter ) to fit a 15 pin-female connector. Check with Dave Costello, Marina Tarasova, Julia Cohan, or through e-mail prior to use of an external PC
- The projector's resolution will adjust to the laptop's settings
- Check your laptop or notebook User Guide to see if there is a toggle key to use alternate monitor
- We strongly recommend that you test use of an external PC prior to the scheduled presentation
Additional Equipment
Telephone: Help is available!
- The telephone may be used for any on-campus call
- The telephone may be used for long distance calls with your SOM 8-digit authorization code
- If you set off the alarm, call Public Safety immediately, then call Dave Costello (645-3210) or Julia Cohan (645-3286) or Marina Tarasova (645-3210)
- If you encounter problems, use the following contact list in order:
- The Jacobs Lab Consultants between 8:00 a.m. and 11:00 p.m. and after 10:00 a.m. on weekends: 645-3332
- Resource Management: 645-3210
Overhead Projectors - Instructional Technology Services support
- If you finish the acetate roll, replace it with one from the podium, and inform Resource Management
- If there are no acetate rolls in the podium, call Resource Management at 645-3210
- If a light bulb burns out, turn off overhead before sliding bar to use second bulb
- NOTE: Failure to turn off overhead projector will cause the second bulb to burn out immediately as you slide the lever to use the second bulb
- After you have switched to second bulb, turn projector back on
- Notify Resource Management or the IT staff that a bulb burned out
Microphone
- A microphone is available. It is located in the side cabinet of the podium (under the Wolf Visualizer)
- Plug the connector into the side of the podium at the floor below the monitor on the left side
- Switch on the microphone on the belt clip unit
- Clip the lapel clip on a collar, tie or lapel
- When done, press the release button before unplugging microphone
- Be sure to put it back in podium
Sound System
- All audio output from the VCR, Computer, CD-ROM and microphone, goes to the ETEC room sound system
- There are separate volume controls on the podium for VCR and AUX - auxiliary (microphone)
