I am very interested in the impact of my research on management practice. My research on strategic HR (with Mark Huselid) has generated a great deal of interest among senior HR and line managers, but it wasn't always clear how to translate those results into management practice. In recent years we have focused on extending the implications of our academic research to the world of the practicing manager. That work, which is summarized in The HR Scorecard, initially focused on how to design a strategically focused HR architecture and how to measure the contribution of HR to firm performance. In The Workforce Scorecard, we introduce the notion of a differentiated workforce strategy and the important role of line managers in that strategy. The Differentiated Workforce provides a much more extensive business case for a differentiated workforce strategy with considerable emphasis on the execution of such a strategy.
