Experts on Embezzlement, Treasury, to Speak at School of Management

BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Two expert financial professionals will speak at the University at Buffalo School of Management as part of this year’s Helen and Oscar Sufrin Lectureship in Accounting on Oct. 5 in the Newman Center on UB’s North Campus.

Toby Bishop, director of the Deloitte Forensic Center, will speak at 9 a.m. on major embezzlement cases, and Scott Socha, vice president-treasurer at Delaware North Cos., will speak at 10:45 a.m. on the treasury functions at privately held companies.

A Deloitte Eminence Fellow and a global thought leader in fraud detection and deterrence, Bishop was named five times to Accounting Today’s list of the Top 100 Most Influential People in the Accounting Profession. He is co-author, with Frank Hydoski, of the book “Corporate Resiliency: Managing the Growing Risk of Fraud and Corruption” and a related article in Harvard Business Review.

Bishop is a contributing author and a member of the Board of Editors of Business Crimes Bulletin, a member of the committee of research and education advisors for the Institute of Internal Auditors, and a member of the advisory council of the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners. He also assists the Center for Audit Quality’s Anti-Fraud Working Group.

Socha joined Delaware North Cos., a global leader in hospitality and food service, in 1999. He has held a series of high-level positions in or directly related to finance, including manager of financial planning and analysis, assistant controller and vice president of finance for the company’s parks and resorts division. In his current position, he oversees the company’s worldwide cash-management activities specific to business operations, capital projects and acquisitions, and manages relationships with external capital providers throughout the world.

Prior to Delaware North, Socha spent four years at General Motors and was extensively involved in the spin-off of Delphi Automotive Systems. In addition, he has served as an adjunct faculty member in the School of Management, teaching finance and accounting.
